Desperately searching for George Leonard Getchell who was a buddy back in Massachusetts in the 1960's.In the 60's Getch was a National Guard pilot living in Danvers, Mass playing drums with a jazz group on the week-ends that he wasn't "a week-end warrior" buzzing the turkey farms in his F-14 jet---until the "Berlin Crisis" --when he was called up for active duty, Trained in Florida, then sent to England (and I think, France. He re-enlisted deciding to make the Air Force his career. Last I heard, he was a Lt.Col., stationed in Arizona or Nevada, married to a girl he met in England and then .... nothing more. You might want to check with any relatives you still have in Viet Nam to see if they have seen him there. His was living in Hue then moved to Quang tri. Due to a fire in the military records facility, All of my fathers records were burned. He enlisted in the Army 1943 and was sent to a military base somewhere in Maine. From there he wound up in Guam where he was severely wounded and spent a number of months on a hospital ship. I am desparate for any info on military facilities in maine during ww2. What units were there etc. According to family, my father was awarded numerous medals which he never recieved. Im trying to find ANY records that will help me attain these medals to put in his flag case. Dad never would talk about the war. Im sure it was just too painful. I am a USN vet and was proud to serve. Any help would be most appreciated.

When I met him he served in the US army back in 1981 in Kaiserslautern/Landstuhl, Germany. He moved back to the US roundabout end 1981, beginning of 1982. We've met in the Moonbase (Disco).The last time I had contact with him is when he wrote me a letter back in 1983/84, adressed in Alexandria VA. At that time he was stationed as a military police in Armory Washington DC. Before that he served in NC, BA, SC, NY.W.Point, MD and MA. For some reason we've lost track and I am curious to know what has become of him. On some pictures I had from him he was there with some buddies, named Red, Frasher and Whimp. My father was in military service in Aeronautica Militare Italiana in Lecce (Puglia-Italia). On 18 november 1943 he rescued an american pilot who was fainted in the airplane on fire that couldn’t take off. The pilot died due to an incident of the help-means that was transporting him. My father was decorated for Military Valor by the Aeronautica Militare Italiana for the action he made; I’d like to know the name of the pilot and more details about this action. I don’t konw his group of belong but I know there were a lot of american airplanes taking off every morning from Lecce. I’m searching any informations, the group was operating there... I saw a banner on Route 28 near Yorkshire VA on the way to work and I'm finally checking it out! I'm an old Navy brat and during dessert storm I got a few "pen-pals" from an address in the paper that were stationed over there. If you are stationed over seas and want a pen-pal email me! I saw a banner on Route 28 near Yorkshire VA on the way to work and I'm finally checking it out! At the age of eighteen, I was inducted into the U.S. Navy on 12/30/1943 and sent by, Lehigh Valley RR, to Sampson Naval Training Station, NY. I underwent training for about five weeks. Was then transferred, on or about 2/2/44, to Camp Bradford, VA. I was assigned to LCT #001 (A Mark 5) at Camp Bradford, for training. Upon completion of training the crew traveled, by train, to Tonawanda, NY and picked up LCT #1019 (Mark 6). Sailed the LCT down the Erie Canal to Newport News. Was assigned to Flotilla Two. The LCT #1019 was then loaded by a very large crane onto the deck of LST #603 and we were transported, via LST #603, to Oran, Africa where we were 'dumped' in the Mediterranean. Trained in landings at Algiers and then on to Tunisia where we were towed, by LCI, to Palermo, Sicily. More training and then in on the tail end of Anzio, Italy. Moved up to Salerno then up to Naples for more training and eventually, loaded for Southern France. Had 3 Sherman tanks, 2 - 10 wheeler trucks, 2 jeeps and about 150 troops. Landed in Sardinia to allow troops to eat and bath in water. Reloaded and on to Southern France. Went in to St. Tropez on the 2nd wave and then did much ship to shore. Mostly troops and equipment. Dates elude me but we returned to Africa where we were loaded, by a ‘floating’ crane onto the deck of LST #492 and returned to the states. After a time we were assigned LCT #647, Flotilla 41, Group 122 for Pacific operations. This was loaded on LST #1080 in "THREE" sections!!! Two days out of Pearl Harbor the conflict ended. Upon our arrival in Pearl Harbor, we, the crew assembled the LCT in the water. If we had known that one of the connecting tanks would be our water supply, we might have taken more pains to make it water tight. Consequently, we drank salty water for about a year. Spent most of the time at Pearl Harbor in East Loch doing ship to shore. The LCT was loaded onto LST #47 (in one piece) and we returned to the states for discharge. Our group was assigned to Flotilla #10. Some of the men I remember serving with were: Herbert Reynolds, EM (Rhode Island) *** Ens. Gszell, LCT 1019 (East Orange, NJ) *** Robert Mount, QM (Wounded by shrapnel in S. France) *** Mike Dadonna, Cook (Philadelphia, PA) *** Ens. Farmer, LCT 647 *** J Y Hoffman, SEA1 (Macon, GA) *** Doug Huskins, GM *** Don Calloway, SEA1 *** John Pomerski, MMM *** Henry Hillier, COX (Bronx, NY) *** John Ireland, ??? I started as F 2/C to SEA 2/C to SEA 1/C, to Coxwain and ended my tour as BM 2/C. I have some pictures of LCT's and you are most welcome to copy or scan them. This is a great website...the easiest to use, I've found. Would like to find a friend I was stationed with at Parris Island from 1968-70. Her name was Dianne Bartolet, from Canton Ohio, and I believe she was either a Cpl. or Sgt. She was discharged in 1970, worked @1st Bttn. Hdqtrs, I believe. Anyway, at that time, it was the old white buildings across the main parade deck. Lost contact with her around 1973 and haven't been able to re-locate her. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am looling for anyone who served with my dad URBAN FISCHER. He passed away whin I was very young Because of wounds he got during world war II. I have his Honorable Discharge. It states his organization was 302AAF Base Unit. Place of separation Base Baer Field FT. Wayne Indiana. It also says he was a cook. He served in the battles and campaigns of Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia Rome-Arne Go 33 WD 45. I don't know what all that means but that is what is on the paper. He was also decorated with the Purple Heart. He recieved his wounds in the European African Middle Eastern 11 July 43. He served from October 5, 1942 to October 31, 1945. On the paper it has: Personnel Officer--LAMAR E. NARON 1st LT AC also Disbursing officer--ROSENFELD MAJ. FD. It would mean so much to me to be able to talk to someone who knew my dad. I have been searching for many years. My mom and dad were devorced and being at a very young age when he died I have a need to talk to anyone who knew him. He isalways on my mind. Even though I didn't get to know him the love I have for jim is very strong. Anyone who can tell me a way of finding anyone who was in hi unit please e-mail me. I remember the first time I visited the Vietnam Memorial when I was 18. I stood in awe and tears came to my eyes unbidden.. I never knew anyone that had served in that war, but it moved me beyond words or explaination. To be honest, I've only known men or women briefly in passing or through relationships where the men I've dated served previously..that have served our country, as my life's path never took me into the service. As I look through this site (and sites like it).. I still stand back in awe from the friendships, the lives touched, the friends lost..the missing pieces now being searched for again, the friends remembered...I think it takes special people to serve this country and I admire everyone of you. I served my country in the USMC from 1972 thru 1975. I was stationed at Marine Corps Communication and Electionics School, MCRD San Diego and 29 Palms. I have been searching for a long, lost friend I met during my boot camp graduation in April of 1973 at MCRD Parris Island, SC. His name is Richard "Rick". He was with Motor Transportation and came to visit me at my parents home (driving a Volkswagen beetle) during my boot camp leave. I maintained contact him with him for about 6-9 months after that and then lost contact with him. I would dearly love to find him and see how he is doing. I served in Nam.1965/1966 as a member of a 4 man artillery FO team as a radio operator my nickname was" Bull winkle". My artillery unit was attached to the 2nd Battalion 4th Marines in Quang-Tin Chu-Lai. I'm looking for the original members of my 4 man FO team. I forgot to mention that my wifes brother served with the Ukrainian Rifles, A Russian advisory team in Nam for 2 years. He gets $100 a month for each year served. We get nothing. Seems like our government just pushes us into a corner and forgets us. We went, we served, we died, we remember. I don't think to highly of our government for how they treated the Viet Vets. I never got a welsome home thing, just a hard time-- baby killer they called me. censored I was a 3531/1345 and engineer! I got out in May of '71 and re enlisted August of '71 because of the attitudes people took when they found out I was in 'nam. They call it the unpopular war, people should bitch to the government and not the Viets, we went because we thought it was the "right" thing to do. I have no regrets but sometimes I think I should never have gone but I did. I went for the service of the VA and had to pay for it a couple months ago even though I served the Corps for 24 years! Non service connected injury. I just got my yearly check up! Cost me over $200. We sure got screwed, but we went when we were needed and now they don't need us anymore and shove us into a corner. I think a little respect would be the plan of the day. Oh sure we got "the wall", but what about giving homage to the living too? When I got out the first time there was NO work for me because I served 4 years in Vietnam. I reenlisted a couple months later. Even today people will sneer when they find out I am a Viet Vet and they think I have a mental defect-- a crazed killer i think. It was very hard to come home for this. I completed my 24 and now i get a small income but I'm happy with it because i don't have to answer to anyone... except my ole woman. *smile*. I think our government should re evalute their Viet Nam vets. I didn't go because of them, I went because of me and my love for our country. I have memories, some good, some bad but the good memories are of my friends, not the war itself because we all shared in something we would never have had if we hadn't went. Sure some died, some didn't. R&R was good. *smile*. If there is any thing to be taken away to make our government more sound its the Viet Vets who gets a cut. Now theres a law in the Senate that says when A retiree from the service gets to be 65 and draws social security he loses his service pension. I hope this doesn't pass. Vietnam protestors? What the censored did they have to protest while we were there and they weren't? I enjoyed the Corps and still do. So munch on this for awhile.

I served 5 years in the Marines and spent two years in the Army(notice the difference in my phraseology?). I've been to Camp Lejeune, NC, MCAS New River, NC, MCAS Kaneohe Hawaii and Fort Bliss, TX. I went into the Army because I needed a job, I went into the Corps, because I wanted to be a Marine. I don't regret either, but I do regret getting out of the Corps-I miss it every day! SEMPER FI!

I just finished reading your book (-Ch. 6) I really enjoyed it. It brought back a lot of memories even though I spent all my 13 month tour in the bush in northern "I" corps. I remembering doing a lot of the same crapy jobs you did. At the time, I spent my time in Viet Nam honestly believing I was contributing to the cause of the South. Later on in years people often ask how I could ever be a part of that war. I guess, not everyone can understand looking back on it now. You choose to serve the lord and I choose to stay in the Marine Corps to help me cope with what I did. Take care, and keep up the good work. Semper Fi

I received an email from your site, so I wanted to check it out. I am very impressed with your efforts here. It has been a little over 30 years since I completed my tour in Vietnam with the Marine Corps. Besides my immediate family you are only the SECOND person to say thank you for serving your country. The first person was a fellow coworker last Veterans Day when he took me out to lunch. He had physical disabilities which prevented him from serving and he said that this was his way of saying thank you by taking veterans out for lunch on that special day. He said it wasn't much, but I told him he had no idea how much it meant to me to finally have someone say thank you. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I did anything special or heroic that warranted any thanks or praise, but I don't believe the Vietnam veterans deserved to be treated with such cold,indifference; especially the TRUE heroes, my fellow brothers and sisters who gave their ALL, even to the point of death. On their behalf, I say a heartfelt, tearful THANK YOU to you!
